The Kickoff
Garh Shyamnagar Junior Basic School, Scheme II
The Green Being Foundation, in collaboration with the Garh Shyamnagar Junior Basic School, Scheme II, a government-run school in Shyamnagar, organized a Social Awareness Campaign on the benefits of saving water and planting trees on the 13th of July, 2024 from 11.30 A.M. to 2.00 P.M. The drive aimed at nurturing amongst the students and parents the need to conserve water and plant more trees since the approaching future in front of all of us seems to be quite miserable and droughty, organizing a drawing competition amongst the students, and eventually planting tree saplings in various places around the school campus including the garden.
With the esteemed presence of Mr. Sudipta Bhadra, founder, and director of Green Being Foundation, Mr. Ashis Kumar Das, the dean of the school, Mr. Madhav Das Char, the awareness campaign kickstarted with a welcome note from Mr. Rana Choudhury where introduced the NGO to the audience and requested them to kindly lend their ears to this wonderful endeavor since it promises a dedicated insight into the natural ways of improving our lifestyles for the future. Following the welcome note was the speech by Mr. Sudipta where he went on to talk about the different ways of water conservation like restricting unnecessary use of water in the form of keeping tapwater open for long, checking the toilets for leaks if any, effective disposal of wastewater, reusing a substantially used water for another purpose (say cleaning motor cars with the water that has been previously used to wash utensils). He also discussed the various advantages of planting trees and how trees, in the form of giving us oxygen, cleaning the air, preventing soil pollution, enhancing biodiversity, or reducing greenhouse gases; act as man’s best friend.
Next on the board was Mr. Madhav Das Char who, taking the queue from Mr. Bhadra, elaborated a bit more on the issues faced by the common man from cutting trees and misusing water and the kind of consequences they face from activities like these. He also took the opportunity to acknowledge the sincere efforts undertaken by the NGO in spreading more awareness amongst the masses and the dedicated urge shown by them towards collectively working together towards a better tomorrow.
The discussion session came to an end with the ending note of Mr. Ashis Kumar Das who expressed his deepest gratitude towards the NGO and thanked them for coming to their school and starting their journey with them. The session found the students and their parents in a truly committed spirit towards making their mark towards further advancements. With this, the parents were made to disperse the hall and the drawing competition was announced.
Each student took to their art papers and crayons with utmost enthusiasm, giving it their all behind the art, with their own creative mind spaces and teenage artistic expertise as Mr. Bhadra went around and awarded the students with art pencils.
The teachers collected their drawings one by one after they were done with their artwork. One by one, each drawing was analyzed, and although it was quite difficult to select from them who might emerge as the first, second, and third, the judges determined the winners and hence awarded them with winning prizes.
Following this was the plantation of the saplings carried out by the students and the organizers collectively. From digging the soil, and situating the roots, to further filling the soil tightly to ensure the durability of the plant and watering it a bit, the activity seemed to excite every student to their highest grit and almost all of them devotedly participated in the process. With this, the first awareness campaign of the Green Being Foundation, which turned out to be an absolute success in the activities of both collaborators, came to an end.
